You're an academic, you have a questioning mind, so I'll answer your first question: my name is pronounced "Cheer-sten."  It's Norwegian.

My mom said I was born with a red pen in my hand.  I corrected and edited any printed text in front of me from the time I could read and write.

I spent over 15-years in the automotive industry, including a stint as the Graphics and Editing Manager for all of Chrysler's owner, service, and diagnostic manuals (look for an illustration of me demonstrating how to put on a safety belt in the Plymouth Prowler!).  I also served as my department's ISO9000 Documentation Manager and auditor.  Yes, I got paid to be a word nerd.

My heart wasn't in cars, though, so to add to my undergrad degree from Wittenberg University, I earned two Master's degrees: an M.A. in the Humanities with an emphasis on African-American History and Literature from Central Michigan University, and an M.S. in Historic Preservation and Museum Science from Eastern Michigan University.  Grammar and word-smithing are like breathing to me.  One of my favorite things to do?  Term papers.  No, seriously, term papers.  Starting in second grade, I wrote book reports for fun.
